A few thoughts on navigating a mid-career malaise in the age of data eating the knowledge world..
I like to think we (the knowledge economists :-)) are still a long way away from AI/ML domination, and so we are somewhat protected. Maybe for another 50 years, if we are lucky.
Earlier this year, I had an early career crisis (5-6 years in, not sure about the work I was doing at the time and the meaning of it all, etc.), so I did a simple skills mapping exercise. I came away thinking that with all of this digitisation and transformation and so on, we still need people who can make decisions about ‘tech’, manage tech, and help others make sense of this tech, so the sensible next step is to nestle oneself in that sweet spot that combines technical expertise and - if I can use management speak - ‘strategy’. I don’t know what that means but I am thinking MBAs won’t go out of fashion any time soon. Haha.
